Introduction
Breast radiology is the branch of medicine
which is predominantly focused on screening, diagnosing and guiding treatment
of breast cancer.
The FHIR artifacts defined in this IG are designed to capture, store, and communicate
the data from a Breast Radiology Exam to support the screening, diagnosing, and treament of
breast cancer.
Scope
This ballot focuses on defining the FHIR artifacts needed to support
Mammography examinations in the US realm.
In later ballot(s) we intend to add the following:
- FHIR artifacts to support Ultra Sound based findings.
- FHIR artifacts to support Magnetic Resonance Imaging based findings.
- FHIR artifacts to support Nuclear Medicine based findings.
- Harmonization of Terminology with Standardized Terminology Sources such as SNOMED, LOINC, RxNorm, and SOLOR.
- Modifications to support non-us realm examinations.
- Enhancements to support CAD/AI based findings and determinations.
- Enhancements for provenance, security and signing.

The vast majority of the terminology defined herein are locally defined code systems and codes. Future
versions of this specification will define and utilize codes from LOINC, SNOMED, RxNORM, and/or SOLOR rather than
the locally defined codes used in this version.
